The Winklevoss twins, famous for their early involvement in Bitcoin, are making a big bet on both the cryptocurrency and a small-town English soccer club.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, through their investment firm Winklevoss Capital, have joined forces with Bitcoin podcaster Peter McCormack as co-owners of Real Bedford Football Club (RBFC). The investment totals $4.5 million, paid entirely in Bitcoin.
The funds will be used for several key purposes. A portion will be allocated to establish a Bitcoin treasury for the club, a strategy McCormack believes will protect them from inflation over the long term. Additionally, the investment will support the development of a new training facility and ongoing programs for youth and girls’ football.
RBFC, based in McCormack’s hometown of Bedford, England, currently operates outside the top tiers of English football. However, McCormack has ambitious plans to propel the club to the prestigious Premier League, where it would compete against giants like Manchester United and Chelsea.
“We’re a long way off,” acknowledges McCormack, “but that’s the dream.” He emphasizes his focus on incremental progress, working towards promotion one league at a time.
The Winklevoss twins are enthusiastic about McCormack’s vision and the potential of Bitcoin to fuel RBFC’s ascent. “We’re not just investing in a club,” says Cameron Winklevoss, “we’re investing in the dream of bringing Premier League football to Bedford.” His brother, Tyler, echoes this sentiment, highlighting their shared belief in Bitcoin’s ability to empower the club’s journey.
This move follows the Winklevoss twins’ recent $4.9 million donation to a crypto-focused political action committee, demonstrating their continued commitment to both Bitcoin and its potential impact across various sectors.
